Cell Phone & Smart Device Policy

Updated for the 2026–2027 school year in accordance with Texas House Bill 1481 and Dallas ISD policy.

What Families Need to Know

  • Leave personal devices at home whenever possible.

  • If your child brings a phone or another permitted personal device, it must be turned off, placed in a backpack before entering the building, and turned in to the homeroom teacher.

  • Devices remain securely stored until dismissal.

  • Meta/AI glasses may not be brought to school without prior permission or an approved exception.

  • To reach your child during the school day, call 972-794-7300.

Why We Have This Policy

A device-free school day protects learning time, reduces distractions, and helps students build positive relationships with classmates and staff.

Which Devices Are Covered?

This policy applies to:

  • Cell phones

  • Smart watches

  • AirPods and other wireless earbuds

  • Personal tablets and laptops

  • Smart glasses, including Meta/AI glasses

  • Other electronic devices that can communicate or connect with other devices

District-issued devices may be used as directed by school staff. Exceptions for documented student needs are explained below.

Daily Device Routine

Arrival

Before entering the building, students turn off their devices and place them in their backpacks. In the homeroom, students turn in their devices when directed. Devices are placed in a labeled bag, envelope, or assigned space and secured against unsupervised access.

Students arriving late must turn in their devices to their homeroom teacher upon arrival.

During the school day

Devices remain turned off and securely stored. Students may not wear, display, or use personal devices in classrooms, hallways, restrooms, the cafeteria, playgrounds, or other school areas unless permitted by an approved exception.

Personal devices may not be used for classroom activities unless required by an approved exception.

Dismissal

Teachers return devices at dismissal. Students must keep them turned off and inside their backpacks until they have been dismissed and are outside the building.

For an early checkout, office staff will arrange for the student’s device to be returned before departure.

Meta/AI Glasses

Meta/AI glasses are not allowed at school without prior permission or an approved exception. These glasses may include cameras, recording features, microphones, speakers, and connections to other devices.

Turning the glasses off or placing them in classroom storage does not make them permitted at school. This rule follows Section 9.1 of the Dallas ISD Student Code of Conduct, page 28.

If a student brings unauthorized Meta/AI glasses to school, a teacher or another campus staff member will collect them and send them to the principal’s office. The school will contact a parent or guardian for pickup, document the violation, and follow district discipline procedures.

How Can I Reach My Child?

Call 972-794-7300 for emergencies or urgent messages.

Students may ask a staff member for help contacting a parent or guardian or request to use the office phone. During emergencies, students must follow staff directions and campus safety procedures.
